How to set up VEHICLE SPEED sensor through Haltech uC-10/iC-7 digital dash

2 min read

This guide is specific to the FD RX-7 fitted with a Haltech uC-10 and JCYT PNP patch loom with OEM engine harness/vehicle speed sensor, but the same concept will generally apply to most 90s - early 2000s jdm vehicles.

The factory cluster acts as a signal converter for the vehicle speed sensor and feeds this to the ECU. Without the factory cluster, the signal has now been removed and vehicle speed is input to the uC-10 via SPI3. This signal will need to be fed back to the ECU via canbus network, and will need to be configured in the software on both ECU and dash end. The signal also requires some filtering, and until Haltech introduces needle smoothing can be choppy if not set up correctly.

1) Connect to uC-10 in NSP and enable IO control

2) Under IO report, should look something like this.

3) Connect up ECU to NSP, under VSS wiring tab, assign VSS to Dash SPI3.

Please copy settings:

Drive train sensor type - digital frequency

Falling edge, Reluctor type

4) You will need to apply filtering to smooth it out. Unfortunately this is not perfect until Haltech introduces needle filtering. Essentially you need to filter the noisy signal and scale this with speed. Please see my settings, good enough for me - but needs some touch up at lower vehicle speed.

5) Next you need to calibrate your sensor - you can copy my settings below. should be pretty close. (this will change depending on your tyre size)

You can adjust this using pulses/km at the bottom. Or drive at 60kph as below and press calibrate.

Don’t want to make one for yourself? You can purchase a plug in harness from the shop.

Here is the uC-10 FD RX-7 white cluster dash file.
